The Air Up There!

Here are a few pics of the Bear Den at the Fire Station. The boys had fun and the firemen were very nice. A great big thanks goes to Terry & Michelle Jones for orchestrating the meeting.

Tuesday

Countdown has begun!!!

Lots of fun last month!!! For a short month, we accomplished a whole mess of achievements and cleaned up some that were missing. Can you believe that we only have 6 regular meetings before Scout Graduation? Yikes!

We have a great Spring planned and hope to have everyone’s cooperation to finish the last of our Achievements. After the trip to the fire station on the 17th, the den will have completed all the requirements for the Bear badge. In fact, some boys have already completed the requirements. The Scouts will need to finish up at home what has not been completed in den. I think that we will be having another work day for the scouts in May so they can finish up.

Special Events:
April 12 - Annual Pack Swim at the YMCA. We will be in the pool from 1-2:30. This completes E19 and the Swimming belt loop and pin if the scout has not earned it.
April 17 - Fire Station visit. Yes, we did just meet there, but this time we get to go up in the bucket truck! However, we will need a signed permission slip for each scout, no exceptions. No slip, no ride.
April 24 - Camping Meeting. We will be overnighting as a pack on Friday, April 25 at Francis Park. Anyone camping (scouts and parents) will need to attend this meeting. We will be going over the camping agenda. Those Bears wanting to earn the Outdoor Activity Award and the Leave No Trace Award need to go on the camp out.
April 25 - Pack Camp Out. Every scout is encouraged to attend. Every scout must have at least 1 parent camping with them. We will meet between 5:30-6:00. We will eat dinner, campfire fun, and breakfast on Sat. Then we will be doing some activities about the outdoors.
May 3 - Baker Park Clean Up. We will be meeting at 10am at the gates to Baker Park. Each scout needs to wear old clothes and work gloves, bring an adult, and a rake if possible. This conservation project is needed for those who want to earn the World Conservation Award.
May 10 - Food Drive. We will once again be helping the Kewanee Food Pantry by collecting food on mail routes. We need to know how many scouts and drivers will be available for the morning and/or afternoon routes.

It looks like we don’t do anything but special events! Let’s make this last bit of scouting for the year something to be proud of!

Thursday

March Madness!

What an awesome February we had! From Derby to Birdhouses, I know that my son loves these aspects of scouting.

Do you know we only have 9 more meetings of regular scouts? That isn’t very many to get everything accomplished so that all earn a Bear Patch. According to my records, we have Achievements 7, 11, & part of 21 to finish up and everyone will get their patch. Hmmm....actually, that’s not right. Each scout is missing at least something in the way of achievements. So on Mar 27, we will be having a clean up day, where scouts can work on missing projects. Some of the projects we did cannot be done in den and will need parental help to complete them.

So what do we do when we finish the achievements? There are many electives to complete and we will be working on belt loops & pins. We will also be earning the Leave No Trace patch & hopefully the World Conservation Patch. Attached is the current achievements for your scout. If you find any inconsistancies, please let me know.

On March 13, we will be visiting the Police/Fire Station. We will meet there (city hall front lobby) at 6:00pm for the tour.

March 20 there will be no meeting due to church services. We will meet on the 27th, even though it is in the middle of Spring Break.

Here is a head’s up: on April 17, our den will be meeting at the Fire Station. We have secured approval to have the Bears go UP in the bucket fire truck. This will require a signed permission slip from every scout to ride. If the scout does not have a signed slip (I will send home on April 3), he will not be able to go up. Sorry, no exceptions. This night we will also be doing A11 this night.

February Newsletter

A Fun Filled February!
We had a great January! Congrats to the scouts for earning their Whittling Chip! Although there were a lot of legs lost, I do feel better, but not comfortable, with my scout using a pocketknife.
I hope everyone had a grand time at the Pinewood Derby too! The district race is on March 8 in Galesburg. It is an optional event. If you want more information, talk to Angela.

This month will be a jam packed achievement month! As always, if your scout cannot attend, he will need to make up the achievements. This does not mean that he has to do the same ones. At the end of the year, 12 must be completed, from the assigned numbers in the book. After the 12 are completed, each part counts toward arrow points. So all are important. If your son completes anything, please tell me.

On February 21, we will be completing a special 100 year of scouting activity. The activity and patch is $4.00 per scout. I need this as soon as possible. If you have any problems, please contact me. Also on this day we invite the scouts to bring a former boy scout. There will be a prize for the oldest scout :-)
