Citizenship

During the special meeting on Jan 15, the scouts were asked to draw a poster and write a paragraph on Citizenship. This fulfills Communicator 8 & Citizen 7 & Citizenship L2. Here are what they wrote. Spelling has been corrected to protect the innocent :-)

Don't use or buy stuff that is not recyclable! You should buy more recyclable things. Also, you should bring bags to stores that you've used. If you are recycling, you are helping the environment. Last, if you recycle, less energy is used. -- Adam

I can be a good citizen by telling people not to pollute our water. I'll tell people not to drive cars. I'll also tell people to turn off appliances to save electricity. Help people with disabilities. Don't pollute. -- Spencer

I can be a good citizen by recycling. Or do not polluting. Or obeying laws. Or help old ladies. Or no polluting -- Gabe

Do not litter, littering is bad. If you don't litter the water will be cleaner. If you recycle there will be a happy and clean environment. Always recycle. And always recycle and/or turn it into something else, and if you don't you will go jail, jail is bad so don't litter ever. So be a good citizen everyday for a good turn daily every day. -- Ty

I can be a good citizen by recycling. You shouldn't throw your trash in your yard. You can save the earth by recycling. Recycle paper and plastic bottles. Don't throw your plastic bottles in the ocean. -- David

I can be a good citizen by recycling. We can recycle plastic, paper and cans. Instead of throwing away that stuff that can be recycled, recycle it. Play safe. Help people. -- Jacob

Look both ways before crossing. Help old ladies. Always walk on the sidewalk. Always go on the crosswalks. Walk on the signal. -- Tristan

Always do a good turn daily. Doing good is great. Everyone should do something good every day. Doing good is a very Cub Scout like thing. There are very many ways to do good. -- Johnny

Settling In

Wow, how our dens have grown! Because we have grown in size, parental support/participation is crucial in helping your scout enjoy scouting and meet his requirements. If you are able to stay for meetings to help, it will be much appreciated. Due to the increased number of scouts, everyone must be picked up INSIDE the church. Webelos (4th & 5th) are picked up in the basement. Please come inside so we know that the scout goes with the parent.

Attendance by every scout is needed in Webelos. We have so much to cover that we only cover it once and can’t really go back. If your scout does miss a meeting, please check with a leader to see what he missed. Missed achievements need to be completed at home.

Once again, we are collecting items for Operation Christmas Child. It’s a way to reach out to needy children around the world through gift-filled shoe boxes. The items will go to less fortunate children in poor countries. This is optional. Please see back of the pack newsletter for more information. Boxes are due back by Nov. 6. Please include $7 with the box.

The scouts will be selling popcorn through the month of October. All popcorn sheets and monies are due to your den leader by Oct. 30. Money is to be collected AT TIME OF ORDER, checks made to BSA Pack 199. Remember that even if the boy sells one item, he receives a patch & pin.

Special Events:
Oct. 26 -PACK & FAMILY FUN EVENT - Each family needs to bring a meat & side dish to share, plus their table service. The festivities will be from 2-5pm on Sunday, Oct 26. We will be at the shelter in Chautaqua Park. Hope to see you there!

Thursday

Welcome to Webelos!

Hello & Welcome to Webelos! I just wanted to introduce myself to the new scout families. I am your scout’s den leader, Lee Ann Bailleu. I was the Bear leader last year and moved up to Webelos with my son, Spencer. My husband, Rob, helps a lot, too, as do many parents in our pack. Webelos is totally different than what we are used to in Cub Scouts. The best way to sum it up is that we are no longer Cub Scouts, but Pre-Boy Scouts. Most of the things we do in Webelos are to prepare the boys for Boy Scouting. It takes a while, that’s why there are 1½ years of Webelos. We will watch the Webelos II cross over to Boy Scouting in February.
Each scout is required to have a Webelos book. This book is really thick, don’t let that fool you, it is for 2 years. There are many things that we get to accomplish this year. If you have any questions, please ask me.

Each month I will be sending home a newsletter like this one. It will contain the schedule for the month and the achievements/requirements met. It will also have any notes I have to inform you what we are needing or planning. If your scout misses a meeting, he will need to fulfill the requirement on his own. If you need help or have any questions please contact me.
I wanted to let all parents know that parental support/participation is crucial in helping your scout enjoy scouting and meet his requirements. If you have any special interests that would be beneficial to the scouts, please fill them out on the scout survey. I am always looking for fun ways to fulfill requirements, so please let me know if you have any ideas!

The uniform is very important to scouting, especially Webelos & Boy Scouts. One thing we learn this year is understanding the uniform. Therefore it is important for the scout to wear his uniform to each meeting and event. If this is a problem, please talk to me.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Special Events:
Sept 27-28: Webelos to camp with the Boy Scouts. We must have a count of people going by Thurs the 25th.
