Wednesday

Settling In

Wow, how our dens have grown! Because we have grown in size, parental support/participation is crucial in helping your scout enjoy scouting and meet his requirements. If you are able to stay for meetings to help, it will be much appreciated. Due to the increased number of scouts, everyone must be picked up INSIDE the church. Webelos (4th & 5th) are picked up in the basement. Please come inside so we know that the scout goes with the parent.

Attendance by every scout is needed in Webelos. We have so much to cover that we only cover it once and can’t really go back. If your scout does miss a meeting, please check with a leader to see what he missed. Missed achievements need to be completed at home.

Once again, we are collecting items for Operation Christmas Child. It’s a way to reach out to needy children around the world through gift-filled shoe boxes. The items will go to less fortunate children in poor countries. This is optional. Please see back of the pack newsletter for more information. Boxes are due back by Nov. 6. Please include $7 with the box.

The scouts will be selling popcorn through the month of October. All popcorn sheets and monies are due to your den leader by Oct. 30. Money is to be collected AT TIME OF ORDER, checks made to BSA Pack 199. Remember that even if the boy sells one item, he receives a patch & pin.

Special Events:
Oct. 26 -PACK & FAMILY FUN EVENT - Each family needs to bring a meat & side dish to share, plus their table service. The festivities will be from 2-5pm on Sunday, Oct 26. We will be at the shelter in Chautaqua Park. Hope to see you there!

Thursday

Welcome to Webelos!

Hello & Welcome to Webelos! I just wanted to introduce myself to the new scout families. I am your scout’s den leader, Lee Ann Bailleu. I was the Bear leader last year and moved up to Webelos with my son, Spencer. My husband, Rob, helps a lot, too, as do many parents in our pack. Webelos is totally different than what we are used to in Cub Scouts. The best way to sum it up is that we are no longer Cub Scouts, but Pre-Boy Scouts. Most of the things we do in Webelos are to prepare the boys for Boy Scouting. It takes a while, that’s why there are 1½ years of Webelos. We will watch the Webelos II cross over to Boy Scouting in February.
Each scout is required to have a Webelos book. This book is really thick, don’t let that fool you, it is for 2 years. There are many things that we get to accomplish this year. If you have any questions, please ask me.

Each month I will be sending home a newsletter like this one. It will contain the schedule for the month and the achievements/requirements met. It will also have any notes I have to inform you what we are needing or planning. If your scout misses a meeting, he will need to fulfill the requirement on his own. If you need help or have any questions please contact me.
I wanted to let all parents know that parental support/participation is crucial in helping your scout enjoy scouting and meet his requirements. If you have any special interests that would be beneficial to the scouts, please fill them out on the scout survey. I am always looking for fun ways to fulfill requirements, so please let me know if you have any ideas!

The uniform is very important to scouting, especially Webelos & Boy Scouts. One thing we learn this year is understanding the uniform. Therefore it is important for the scout to wear his uniform to each meeting and event. If this is a problem, please talk to me.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Special Events:
Sept 27-28: Webelos to camp with the Boy Scouts. We must have a count of people going by Thurs the 25th.

Tuesday

Campout Cool!

We had a great time camping at the 40 & 8 last weekend. I hope the boys enjoyed it too. It was a bit chilly, but no rain!

Don't forget about scout sign up this Thursday! See you at 6:00!

Thursday

SCOUT SIGN UP!

Scout sign up will be 9/11 at 6:00. Hopefully you have gotten a postcard in the mail about camping, with a schedule on it. Please have the scouts wear their uniform if possible. The scouts will be taken outside to do some belt loops. We would appreciate all you seasoned parents to help the newcomers. It seems so chaotic at signup and we are afraid it scares the newbies (esp tiger parents!) I think the Tiger parents will get their own orientation by last year's Tiger leaders. Any help you can give the newbies will be appreciated. BTW we will also need help outside with corralling. See you then!

Friday

PACK CAMPING!!!

Pack 199 will be camping on Fri Sept 5 at 40 & 8 in Atkinson. More info to come by mail. Hope you all can make it!

Thursday

PACK SWIM!

Pack 199 will be swimming at the Northeast Oasis on Saturday, Aug 16, from 1-3pm. Hope to see you there!

Sunday

FISHING THIS WEEK

We will be fishing this Wed, June 18. 6-7pm at Johnson's Boat Dock. Hope to see all of you there!

Friday

BEARS NO MORE!

Well, it happened, all the Bears left the den. :-) I hope to see you next year in Web1, or maybe at day camp!

Thursday

Hey, Hey, Hey, Goodbye...

Can you believe that it is the last month of scouts already? The bears have worked very hard, sometimes unwillingly, but hard nonetheless, to make it to Webelos.

During the next week, please go through the bear handbook with your scout. Really fine tooth comb it and mark anything they have completed. School work counts, family outings count, trips to grandma’s count; all these count toward final electives and achievements. I will be collecting the books next week (if you can get the book to me earlier, all the better) so I can make final counts and order awards. Belt loops & pins earned outside of den will have to be purchased by the parents. Belt loops earned in den will be paid for by the pack. If you can’t find your book, here are the requirements and electives for bear: http://www.boyscouttrail.com/cub-scouts/bear-scouts.asp

We will be meeting for 3 pack events in the summer. We go fishing, swimming, & camping. I will be contacting you during the summer with particulars. By attending all 3, the scout earns a special patch.

Don’t forget about Day Camp this summer July 7-11. We really encourage the scouts and parents to go. Special patches and tokens are earned. We need to know what parents would be willing to be drivers and day walkers. Please think about doing this.

Special Events:
May 3 - Baker Park Clean Up. We will be meeting at 10am at the gates to Baker Park. Each scout needs to wear old clothes and work gloves, bring an adult, and a rake if possible. This conservation project is needed for those who want to earn the World Conservation Award.
May 10 - Food Drive. We will once again be helping the Kewanee Food Pantry by collecting food on mail routes. We need to know how many scouts and drivers will be available for the morning (9-12:30pm) and/or afternoon (12:30-4:00) routes.
May 22 - Advancement! Families are invited to see the Bears advance to Webelo. Please bring a snack to share.

Friday

CANCELLED!!!

CAMPING FOR TONIGHT HAS BEEN CANCELLED,

SOMETHING ABOUT BAD WEATHER OR SOME SUCH.

We will be meeting tomorrow at 9:00 am at Francis Park to work on our electives though. Hope you can make it!

The Air Up There!

Here are a few pics of the Bear Den at the Fire Station. The boys had fun and the firemen were very nice. A great big thanks goes to Terry & Michelle Jones for orchestrating the meeting.

Tuesday

Countdown has begun!!!

Lots of fun last month!!! For a short month, we accomplished a whole mess of achievements and cleaned up some that were missing. Can you believe that we only have 6 regular meetings before Scout Graduation? Yikes!

We have a great Spring planned and hope to have everyone’s cooperation to finish the last of our Achievements. After the trip to the fire station on the 17th, the den will have completed all the requirements for the Bear badge. In fact, some boys have already completed the requirements. The Scouts will need to finish up at home what has not been completed in den. I think that we will be having another work day for the scouts in May so they can finish up.

Special Events:
April 12 - Annual Pack Swim at the YMCA. We will be in the pool from 1-2:30. This completes E19 and the Swimming belt loop and pin if the scout has not earned it.
April 17 - Fire Station visit. Yes, we did just meet there, but this time we get to go up in the bucket truck! However, we will need a signed permission slip for each scout, no exceptions. No slip, no ride.
April 24 - Camping Meeting. We will be overnighting as a pack on Friday, April 25 at Francis Park. Anyone camping (scouts and parents) will need to attend this meeting. We will be going over the camping agenda. Those Bears wanting to earn the Outdoor Activity Award and the Leave No Trace Award need to go on the camp out.
April 25 - Pack Camp Out. Every scout is encouraged to attend. Every scout must have at least 1 parent camping with them. We will meet between 5:30-6:00. We will eat dinner, campfire fun, and breakfast on Sat. Then we will be doing some activities about the outdoors.
We need to know how many scouts and drivers will be available for the morning and/or afternoon routes.

It looks like we don’t do anything but special events! Let’s make this last bit of scouting for the year something to be proud of!

Thursday

March Madness!

What an awesome February we had! From Derby to Birdhouses, I know that my son loves these aspects of scouting.

Do you know we only have 9 more meetings of regular scouts? That isn’t very many to get everything accomplished so that all earn a Bear Patch. According to my records, we have Achievements 7, 11, & part of 21 to finish up and everyone will get their patch. Hmmm....actually, that’s not right. Each scout is missing at least something in the way of achievements. So on Mar 27, we will be having a clean up day, where scouts can work on missing projects. Some of the projects we did cannot be done in den and will need parental help to complete them.

So what do we do when we finish the achievements? There are many electives to complete and we will be working on belt loops & pins. We will also be earning the Leave No Trace patch & hopefully the World Conservation Patch. Attached is the current achievements for your scout. If you find any inconsistancies, please let me know.

On March 13, we will be visiting the Police/Fire Station. We will meet there (city hall front lobby) at 6:00pm for the tour.

March 20 there will be no meeting due to church services. We will meet on the 27th, even though it is in the middle of Spring Break.

Here is a head’s up: on April 17, our den will be meeting at the Fire Station. We have secured approval to have the Bears go UP in the bucket fire truck. This will require a signed permission slip from every scout to ride. If the scout does not have a signed slip (I will send home on April 3), he will not be able to go up. Sorry, no exceptions. This night we will also be doing A11 this night.

February Newsletter

A Fun Filled February!
We had a great January! Congrats to the scouts for earning their Whittling Chip! Although there were a lot of legs lost, I do feel better, but not comfortable, with my scout using a pocketknife.
I hope everyone had a grand time at the Pinewood Derby too! The district race is on March 8 in Galesburg. It is an optional event. If you want more information, talk to Angela.

This month will be a jam packed achievement month! As always, if your scout cannot attend, he will need to make up the achievements. This does not mean that he has to do the same ones. At the end of the year, 12 must be completed, from the assigned numbers in the book. After the 12 are completed, each part counts toward arrow points. So all are important. If your son completes anything, please tell me.

On February 21, we will be completing a special 100 year of scouting activity. The activity and patch is $4.00 per scout. I need this as soon as possible. If you have any problems, please contact me. Also on this day we invite the scouts to bring a former boy scout. There will be a prize for the oldest scout :-)

Addenda to January Newsletter

January 31st - Pack meeting -Bears & parents need to be there at 5:30pm to help set up.

February 2nd - Pinewood Derby Day - Bears and their adult need to be at the church at 1:15pm for car weigh in.

February 3rd - Scout Sunday - All scouts are invited to come to the church service at the Baptist Church at 9:00am. David Rice will be presenting the church with the charter for our pack. If your son wants to participate please tell me. If your son wears his shirt and participated at his own church, please let me know.

JANUARY 2008 NEWSLETTER

I hope the holidays were enjoyable for everyone! Now that we are back to scouts, there is much to complete.

The next 2 months will be so much fun, and a lot of work too. Many achievements will be completed so attendance is needed.
**POCKETKNIFE ALERT** On Jan. 17 will be one of the days the boys have been waiting for -- Pocketknife work. Each scout will need to bring his own knife and I would like to have as many adults as possible to help. We will discussing responsibilities beforehand and will not hesitate to take the knives away if the scout is not behaving properly. We encourage parents to talk with their scout about the uses and misuses of pocketknives.
Our pack meeting is on Jan. 31. We will be doing magic tricks for an audience. If your son has a favorite trick, have him bring it on Jan 10 to teach the den. As always families are welcome.

PINEWOOD DERBY DAY will be Saturday, Feb 2, beginning at 2:00 pm. Each boy will receive a kit to make his car. There will be adult races also. Extra kits are available at Breedlove’s.
Scout Sunday is February 3. Please discuss Achievement 1 a & b with your scout.

On February 21, I would like to complete a special 100 year of scouting activity. The activity and patch is $4.00 per scout. Please have this to me by the beginning of February. If you have any questions, please contact me.

As always, feel free to complete anything in your handbook at home. Just let me know what is completed.
